Parents Are To Be Honoured Unconditionally

Ephesians 6:1-2 "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise."

There is a big difference between obedience and honour to parents.

Obedience comes as a result of instruction, and parents are encouraged to give instructions in the Lord. While honour is born out of Love, it is what you do from the depth of your heart even when it is hard to do. Essentially honouring is the function of the heart because it is most not presented in motions but motives as against Obedience. 

The misconception of this two is where many of us are missing it.

Talking about Obedience, majority of us obey our parents, some of us do because we probably don't have a choice and unfortunately we have some who unashamedly disobey their parents to their face. 

When it comes to honouring parents, it is something born out of the mindset that this is my Father and this is my Mother, not minding whether they are good or bad, poor or rich, educated or illiterate, pagan or believer, drunkard or not.

As far as parenthood is concerned, your honouring to them is unconditional and independent of whatever circumstances. It is a function of the heart, that oooooh!! from the depth of my heart I honour you Mum, that as you utter the word, " Good morning Dad" it is coming from your heart, irrespective of what has transpired.

Some of us have built sensible reasons not to honour our parents, it is true we have millions of Parents (Fathers and Mothers)  who don't deserve our honour, because they are not good examples. Your Parents have chosen the kind of life they want to live,  you also have a choice to choose the kind of life you want to live,  independent of their's. We must not religate our responsibility from the Lord because of what we have experienced. We can choose to obey the Lord.

Their actions might have given us tons of legitimate reasons not to honour them, but I encourage you to see that those reasons are not  strong enough to relief us of our responsibility to them as their Sons and Daughters. 

Your prosperity and long life is trap in your unconditional Honour to your parents. The scriptures says, "That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth." Ephesians 6:3

And Parents as much as you can, as God grants you help, please do not give your Sons and Daughters reasons not to honour you, instruct them in the Lord, only then can they obey you. As the scriptures says," And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." Ephesians 6:4
